In Pentecostal and charismatic circles, there remains this fear of blaspheming the Holy Spirit. For example, if certain Preachers are engaged in questionable practice, there remains a fear of calling it out, just in case it might be the Holy Spirit? I don’t believe that this approach is a biblical one, and it would seem that false Teachers thrive on the fear of Gods people, in being afraid to use discernment, especially when these people are claiming to be speaking or acting from the Holy Spirit.

But the Bible encourages us to try the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false Prophets are gone out into the world. See 1 John 4:1-6. These false Teachers and those who are gripped by this fear, are quick to quote the verse, “touch not the Lords anointed, and do His Prophets no harm.” See Psalm 105:15.

But if these people are teaching something contrary to scripture are they really anointed? I would say no! Also for a Preacher to use this fear tactic is nothing more than manipulation and a scare tactic. A true man or woman of God would not use this tactic, but would encourage you to examine their teaching in light of the holy scriptures, to make sure what they are saying is true. They understand as human beings that they are prone to error and operate in a submitted sense so their teaching can be examined.

In fact I would even go as far as saying, that if a Preacher is using this verse above to exonerate himself from inspection, that’s a sure sign that they are a false teacher, or at least heading down that track.

My question to you is, who is really in danger of blaspheming the Holy Spirit? isn’t it rather those who claim that the Holy Spirit is speaking when He isn’t? Or operate in bizarre ways and attribute those actions to the Holy Spirit? We need not fear to use discernment in these areas, He is after all called “the Spirit of Truth.” this fear to call out obvious error out of a fear of blaspheming the Spirit is not of God! It rather paralyzes and neutralizes believers to use discernment, and false Teachers take full advantage of this! The truth will set us free in this issue, it is time to grow in our discernment, and not be afraid to use discernment, it is desperately needed in the body of Christ!
