Today I was gripped by a quote I saw on twitter and it really convicted me. It reminded me as a Preacher, though I may cry out against the sin in others, I must deal with the harder issue and the sin in me. The quote is this, “it is easier to cry against one thousand sins of others, than kill one of your own.” John Flavel. Dying to sin is no easy task and would be impossible without the help of the Holy Spirit. As I deal first with my own sin, it gives me a greater capacity in dealing with the sins of others. If I forget I too am a sinner, then I will be unable to help others. Jesus said it this way, and I address the text to myself.
“You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brothers..” Mat 7:5. It is right to preach against sin, and we should continue to do so, but beware of a tendency in all of us, in crying against the sins of others we neglect our own. Trying to clean another person with a dirty hand will only make them dirtier. Our own hands must be cleaned by the blood of Jesus, if we are going to clean others.
